Lockdowns, Partygate, stockpiling toilet paper, social distancing and casual alcoholism. Just some of the memories COVID-19 has left us with. But what about the toll it has left on our health?
It’s no secret that poorly prepared health and care services across the UK were exposed by the lack of staff and lack of acute hospital beds, not to mention the unsuitable infection control measures needed to contain an infection that claimed just over 275,000 new victims in the UK in one day in early 2022 (Worldometer’s COVID-19 data), and had around 4.9 million positive cases in the UK in late March 2022 (BBC / Office for National Statistics). Over half of the UK population has had COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and sadly, over 200,000 people in the UK have lost their lives to COVID-19. Long COVID – those suffering with COVID-19 symptoms for 12 weeks or longer – has affected an estimated 1 in 10 of those who have suffered COVID-19 (The Royal Society). Symptoms can be vague and diverse, but the most common is ongoing and intermittent fatigue, along with ‘brain fog’ and memory problems / confusion.
Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a long-term, fluctuating, neurological disease that causes symptoms affecting many body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems. 75% of ME/CFS sufferers are too ill to work, and a quarter of them are unable to leave their homes or, in some cases, their beds, leading to some healthcare professionals calling it one of the most disabling illnesses known to man.
Both these conditions cause considerable disruption to people’s lives and there is a lot of overlap in the symptoms people experience. Harpenden Medical Health and Wellness Clinic can offer a range of health and wellness treatments from our Cryochamber to our Red Light Therapy Bed to our IV Vitamin Drips to help improve mood and wellbeing.
