DXA Body Scan

The DXA Body Scan offers a detailed picture of your body composition, giving you essential information about your fat tissue, muscle mass, and bone density levels.

The scan results will empower you and our medical professionals to design a plan that optimises your health and wellness, putting you in control of your health journey.

The benefits of a DXA Scan

The Hologic DXA Scan uses low-level X-ray technology to scan your body, differentiating between bone mineral, lean mass and fat mass.

This in-depth analysis of your body composition is useful for a variety of reasons;

  • The DXA scan is the gold-standard method of diagnosing poor bone density, osteoporosis, or low bone density, osteopenia. It provides a detailed analysis of bone health.
  • Fat levels in the body, particularly visceral fat, can be challenging to see without scans but can cause health problems if allowed to develop.
  • Muscle-to-fat ratio – athletes are often interested in their muscle-to-fat ratio as it has implications for improving performance

A DXA scan, or “Dual X-ray Absorptiometry,” is speedy and non-invasive, but the knowledge it provides allows for medical interventions to be put in place that will bring powerful health and fitness benefits.

Your DXA body scan at Harpenden Medical

We use the Hologic DXA, the market leader in body scanners, to give our patients the most accurate results possible.

The Hologic DXA  is an open scanner with an arm that passes over your body as it scans.

Patients lie down for the scan in a comfortable position. We will ensure you are at ease, using foam blocks to support you in the correct position if necessary.

One of our medical professionals will discuss the DXA scan results with you and explain what they mean for your health. You will discuss exercise, medication, and lifestyle strategies to help you achieve goals like losing fat, increasing muscle mass, or improving bone density.

Further Hologix DXA scans will enable us to monitor your progress and work with you to achieve even better outcomes as part of our commitment to your future health.

Frequently asked questions

DXA scans are safe for almost everyone, and many patients find them helpful in optimising their health.

Patients with a family history of osteoporosis often choose to have scans to check their bone density and if necessary, improve their bone health with supplements and exercise.

Athletes find scanning helpful in tracking their muscle mass and muscle-to-fat ratio.

DXA scans are not advised during pregnancy as they involve low-level radiation.

You should refrain from taking calcium supplements and heartburn remedies at least 24 hours before your scan, as these could be picked up on the scan and affect the results.

Not at all. The Hologic DXA scanner’s open design means that claustrophobic patients can tolerate the procedure.

Loose and comfortable clothes are the most comfortable, and it is best to avoid wearing metal buttons or belt clasps, which could affect the scanner.

Hologic DXA scans are a valuable part of ongoing health monitoring, and we recommend yearly scans for patients concerned about bone density.
