Mole Mapping – FotoFinder

FotoFinder Mole Mapping, powered by the most advanced photographic technology and AI, offers precise and comprehensive monitoring of your moles.

This non-invasive procedure enables your doctor to:

  • Examine in great detail any new moles or changes to existing moles
  • Detect melanoma (a type of skin cancer) at an early stage when treatment is most effective
  • Track future changes in your moles

The benefits of FotoFinder Mole Mapping

Most people have between 10 and 45 moles on their bodies, and the majority are entirely benign.  However, in rare cases, skin changes are a sign of skin cancer; the earlier they are detected and treated, the better.

FotoFinder Mole Mapping uses automated total body mapping and dermoscopy to take high-resolution photographs, which can then be analysed by dermatologists. This comprehensive mapping technique allows us to monitor all your moles, even those that may be difficult to see with the naked eye.

FotoFinder’s advanced digital image processing allows for a much more detailed analysis of the appearance of your moles than is possible with other systems. It can detect even the most subtle changes to their colour, size, and shape.

The photographs from your initial mapping are stored and compared to data collected at follow-up appointments. This initial set of images serves as a ‘baseline’ for your skin, providing a reference point for future comparisons. The subsequent mapping will detect changes from this baseline, ensuring early detection and timely treatment, if necessary.

FotoFinder Mole Mapping at Harpenden Medical

FotoFinder is the first system in the world to offer automated total body mapping. This innovative early skin cancer diagnosis system fits perfectly into our philosophy of continuous patient care, allowing us to monitor the long-term health of your skin.

When you arrive at the clinic, we will take a medical history, focusing on your skin health, family history of skin issues, and the amount of sun exposure you have had. We will also ask you if there are any moles that you are particularly concerned about.

You will then be asked to undress, leaving your underwear on, and remove jewellery, including rings and your watch. We will store your jewellery safely for you during the procedure.

Our highly qualified dermatologists will use the FotoFinder automated system to photograph your whole skin, including your palms and soles. They may take extra photographs of moles that look different or that concern you.

The photographs we take will be analysed and stored in a password-protected gallery on the FotoFinder software. They will be compared with the appearance of your moles at further appointments.

FotoFinder Mole Mapping can give you peace of mind about your skin’s health. If we find a mole with early changes, you will immediately be referred to a consultant dermatologist for further investigations.

Frequently asked questions

Everyone is a good candidate for FotoFinder Mole Mapping, as it is an excellent way to detect early skin changes.

This procedure is particularly useful for fair-skinned patients with freckles or numerous moles, as these skin types may be predisposed to skin cancers.

Patients with a family history of skin cancer or extensive sun exposure should also be vigilant about their skin.

The FotoFinder system can detect and identify early-stage melanoma in minutes.

We will refer you to an appropriate consultant.

We recommend every 6 to 12 months. Of course, you can make an appointment any time if you are concerned about changes to a mole between appointments.

We recommend that you wear underwear that allows as much of your skin as possible to be photographed.

It is helpful if you wear the same style of underwear at every follow-up appointment to ensure consistent results.

No special preparation is required. However, we recommend that you do not use fake tanning products for the fortnight before your appointment. This is because self-tan can change the colour of your moles and give false results, potentially affecting the accuracy of the mapping.
