Mole Removal
At Harpenden Medical we have introduced a new service to achieve safe, pain-free, convenient mole removal with minimal scarring and disruption to your daily life. The first step is to book an appointment with one of our medical experts. The appointment can be either a Private GP Appointment to discuss the mole or you can opt for our Mole Mapping -FotoFinder service, which uses photographic technology and artificial intelligence to identify any concerning changes to your mole.
After having your mole assessed you will have the opportunity to discuss treatment options with our experienced medical specialists. You will be helped to identify the procedure that is best suited to your needs, given an idea of the pros and cons, and the type of aesthetic outcome that you can expect to achieve. You will have the peace of mind that if we suspect any serious conditions (like skin cancer or melanoma) we will refer you directly to a dermatologist.
Mole Removal Procedures
- Surgical excision: used for moles sitting deeper in the skin. The mole is cut out and removed, with the normal skin around the edge of the mole also removed. The aim is to remove the root of the mole and prevent it from coming back. The wound is stitched leaving a neat scar.
- Curettage: used for moles that arise in the upper most layer of the skin. The mole is removed by scrapping, with the idea to cut across the base of the lesion so that it is level with the surrounding skin. While less likely to require stitches than surgical excision, moles treated by curettage can be more likely to return.
- Cryotherapy: liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the mole causing the tissue to freeze and eventually slough off. Advantages of cryotherapy include simplicity, minimal discomfort (does not usually require local anaesthetic) and little to no scarring after the mole falls off. We also offer cryotherapy to remove skin tags and warts.
Mole removal takes place with a local anaesthetic, and we also offer Entonox pain relief (also known as gas and air) for anyone feeling especially nervous .After removal if your medical professional has any concerns about your mole being irregular you can be reassured that it will be sent to histopathology (an examination under a microscope) to be properly checked out. All your follow-up care, assessment of the wound and removal of the stitches, is included in the cost of the procedure.
Moles are extremely common (with most people having between 10 to 45 moles somewhere on their body). Moles, which develop from pigment cells known as melanocytes, are usually completely harmless. But if the mole is adversely affecting your appearance, you find that it is catching or rubbing against your clothes, or if you are worried about skin cancer, you may decide to get it removed.

Frequently asked questions
How will I know which mole removal treatment is right for me?
Our expert clinicians will assess your mole during a consultation appointment, and discuss the different treatment options with you. The type of procedure recommended will depend on the location, size, depth in the skin, and whether a histology review is required.
Is mole removal painful?
Your health care provider will use a local anaesthetic to numb the area. Once the pain killer has been administered you won’t feel anything other than a little bit of pulling and tugging. After the procedure you may experience stinging or burning around the area for a few days, which can be easily managed at home with paracetamol (or other pain killers).
Could my mole be cancerous?
It is important to be aware of the ABCDE rule for identifying potentially cancerous moles.
Asymmetry: one half of the mole does not match the other.
Border: the edges are irregular, blurred, or notched.
Colour: the mole has multiple colours within it (such as brown and black).
Diameter: the mole is larger than 6 millimetres.
Evolution: Moles that change in size, shape and colour and other.
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to schedule a mole check as soon as possible.
After your mole has been removed, if our health professionals are at all concerned they will send it away to a histopathology lab to check for cancer.
Will my mole come back?
Some moles, especially those treated by curettage, can recur. If you are really concerned about your mole coming back you might want to opt for surgical excision.
What after care is needed?
You will be advised at the end of the procedure on wound care, and whether you will need to have your stitches out.
It is important to try to keep out of the sun and use sun screen on the scar as sites of inflammation can become pigmented.
For the next few weeks, you will need to avoid soaking the affected area. You should not undertake any strenuous activity (swimming, running, or playing sport) until your health care provider advises that it is safe to start again.
What is the recovery time after mole removal?
It usually takes two to three weeks for skin to heal after mole removal. After a few days your wound should start to scab over and heal and then by five to ten days the scab will fall off revealing new pink skin. Recovery times can vary depending of the size and depth of the mole removed, location on the body, type of mole, your healing ability, and your skin type.
Can I remove a mole at home?
While the internet is full of suggestions (like cutting off the mole with a blade, removing the mole with a specialised pen, using a cream, or even burning off the mole with cider vinegar) you should never be tempted to try to remove a mole yourself. First, there is no way you can tell whether your mole is a benign or malignant lesion. If you remove your mole you cannot get it checked for skin cancer and you could be leaving cancerous cells behind. Another risk is infection; your home obviously will not be as sterile as a medical clinic. Infections delay healing at the site and increase your chances of scarring. Home removal can result in chicken-pox like dented scars or hypertrophic bumpy ones. Always seek professional medical advice about mole removal instead of attempting these risky and unproven methods yourself.

Testimonials
What our patients say...
I visited Harpenden Medical following a series of heart-related issues. I have seen various GPs and been prescribed different medications but didn’t see any improvement.
After speaking with Dr Jollyman, for the first time in years I feel I am finally being listened to and given the right advice. I feel better already after a few short weeks of treatment and I look forward to seeing more results.

A beautiful clinic, on truly stunning grounds.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Harpenden Medical Clinic and have booked further treatments on recommendation after a discovery call to explore my health concerns. I can’t wait to go back!
