Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Hair Restoration

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an advanced, non-surgical treatment designed to stimulate natural hair regrowth and improve hair density, with minimal down time. This evidence-based treatment involves taking a small sample of your blood and isolating platelets (cells critical to blood clotting) which contain growth factors. Growth factors play a key role in tissue repair and regeneration. When carefully injected into the scalp, PRP helps revitalise hair follicles, encouraging stronger, healthier hair growth.

As PRP is derived entirely from your own blood, it is highly biocompatible, with no risk of allergic reaction or disease transmission.

PRP is most commonly used for:

  • Androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness),
  • Hair thinning and reduced hair density,
  • Telogen effluvium (stress-related or post-illness hair shedding),
  • Postpartum hair loss (once stabilised),
  • Alopecia areata (an autoimmune condition attacking hair follicles),
  • Support after hair transplant surgery, and with topical topical minoxidil or oral finasteride.

PRP can:

  • Stimulate hair follicle activity,
  • Improve blood supply to the scalp,
  • Encourage,
  • Prolong the active growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle,
  • Reduce inflammation around hair follicles.

At Harpenden Medical we offer a discreet PRP service, where our nurse-led team will assess your medical history, hair concerns, and treatment goals to ensure that PRP is appropriate for you. PRP is most effective in the early or moderate stages of hair loss, when hair follicles are still present but weakened. It enhances existing follicles but does not create new ones, and may be less effective in advanced hair loss or in individuals with low platelet levels.

PRP treatment consists of three stages:

  1. A small blood sample is taken from your arm.
  2. The sample is processed in a centrifuge to separate platelet-rich plasma.
  3. The PRP is precisely injected into targeted areas of the scalp,

Each session takes approximately 45-60 minutes.

At Harpenden Medical, we usually recommend a course of 4 PRP treatments. The first 3 sessions are carried out at monthly intervals, followed by a 4th session 2 months after the 3rd. Ongoing maintenance treatments may be advised to sustain results.

While some patients experience mild sensitivity or redness in the treated areas, these symptoms typically subside within a few hours. Since PRP is ‘autologous’, meaning that it comes from your own body, there’s no danger of allergy, hypersensitivity, foreign-body reactions or transfer of communicable diseases.

The blood removal process is generally not painful, but you may experience some mild discomfort at the injection site.

You can expect to return to your daily activities immediately after PRP treatment with minimal to no downtime.

Yes. PRP is often used alongside treatments such as minoxidil or finasteride, and to support hair transplants.

You may notice a reduction in hair shedding within 4–8 weeks, with visible improvements in hair thickness and density typically developing over 3–6 months. Results are gradual and continue to improve with a full course of treatment and appropriate maintenance.
