Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is considered both a science and an art, with scientific knowledge from areas such as anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, combined with a personalised approach to treatment and rehabilitation (the art) to help you move better, feel stronger, and live with less pain. It focuses on understanding the root cause of your symptoms and supporting your recovery through hands-on treatment, tailored exercises, and clear, practical advice.
At Harpenden Medical, we offer a friendly and personalised musculoskeletal physiotherapy service for everyone — from elite athletes and weekend exercisers to children (aged 5+) and older adults.
We treat a wide range of conditions, including:
- Muscle and tendon injuries
- Ligament sprains and fractures
- Back and neck pain (including whiplash and sciatica)
- Adolescent and growth-related conditions
- Post-operative recovery
- Long-term concussion (symptoms lasting more than 28 days)
Every treatment plan is tailored to you — whether your goal is getting back to sport, staying active, or simply moving comfortably in everyday life. We take time to build a supportive, trusting relationship so you feel confident in your recovery and empowered to prevent future problems.
Our aim is simple: to help you build a stronger, more resilient body at any age.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Our treatments are designed to:
- Reduce pain (both short-term and long-term)
- Improve movement and flexibility
- Build strength, endurance, and coordination
- Support recovery after surgery
- Improve balance and body awareness
- Help prevent injuries and manage ongoing conditions
Physiotherapy is backed by strong evidence-based research showing it can effectively reduce pain, improve mobility, and support long-term recovery — especially when started early and followed consistently.
Your First Appointment
Your initial consultation (45 minutes) is all about understanding you and your symptoms.
During this session, your physiotherapist will:
- Talk through your medical history and goals
- Assess your movement, strength, and flexibility
- Explain what may be causing your symptoms (in clear, simple terms)
If needed, we can arrange referrals for scans (X-ray, MRI, CT) or specialist consultants.
You’ll leave your first appointment with:
- A clear explanation of your condition
- A personalised treatment and recovery plan
- Exercises to start at home
We support your home programme with easy-to-follow video guidance via a mobile app, so you always know exactly what to do.
Follow-Up Appointments
Follow-up sessions (30 minutes) focus on your progress and recovery. Your treatment may include:
- Hands-on therapy to improve joint mobility and alleviate muscle tightness
- Targeted rehabilitation exercises
- Sports taping (including kinesiology and zinc oxide tape)
- Additional therapies such as acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, or cupping
For longer-term concussion symptoms, we use a comprehensive approach that may include:
- Gradual physical and cognitive rehabilitation
- Support for symptoms such as headaches, sleep, and mood
- Lifestyle and psychological support
We also use objective strength testing equipment to track your progress and help guide your safe return to activity.
Education is a key part of every session — helping you understand your body, recover fully, and reduce the risk of future injury.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral?
No — you can book directly with us.
Will my appointment be covered by insurance?
Appointments are self-funded, but some insurers may reimburse costs. A referral for further investigation or a consultant review can be arranged by your physiotherapist, for which you may be able to use your insurance policy.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Shorts are helpful for lower limb issues; a vest top is useful for upper body concerns.
Is physiotherapy painful?
Some treatments may feel slightly uncomfortable, but we always work within your limits and explain what to expect. Most patients notice reduced pain as treatment progresses.
How quickly will I feel better?
Some people feel improvement after the first session; others need a series of treatments. Your progress will depend on your condition and how closely you follow your plan.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person. Your physiotherapist will discuss a clear plan after your first appointment.

Testimonials
What our patients say...
A beautiful clinic, on truly stunning grounds.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Harpenden Medical Clinic and have booked further treatments on recommendation after a discovery call to explore my health concerns. I can’t wait to go back!
Abigail
I visited Harpenden Medical following a series of heart-related issues. I have seen various GPs and been prescribed different medications but didn’t see any improvement.
After speaking with Dr Jollyman, for the first time in years I feel I am finally being listened to and given the right advice. I feel better already after a few short weeks of treatment and I look forward to seeing more results.
